Fraunhofer Innovation Center

The Fraunhofer Innovation Platform for Advanced Manufacturing (FIP-AM@UT) bridges the gap between research and market-ready solutions. Founded in 2017, FIP-AM@UT  is a collaboration between the University of Twente (UT) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT in Aachen.

FIP-AM@UT works on the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) scale between levels 5 and 8, bridging the gap between fundamental research (TRL 0-4) conducted by universities and market-ready products (TRL 9-10) developed by companies. Positioned in the middle, FIP-AM@UT provides support and enablement to manufacturers, from SMEs to large enterprises.

Knowledge

In the field of Extended Reality (XR), FIP-AM@UT focuses on its applications and benefits for manufacturing. Through projects like 5GXR, FIP-AM@UT explores real-time XR applications powered by 5G, enhancing maintenance, training, and operational efficiency. As part of the Industrial Reality Hub, it contributes applied research, validation frameworks, and industry collaborations to accelerate XR adoption.

Advanced Manufacturing Centre

One of the key advantages of FIP-AM@UT is its ability to simulate production processes within the Advanced Manufacturing Centre (AMC). The AMC serves as an ideal test environment for XR applications in production settings, allowing companies to simulate and validate XR technologies before integrating them into their operations. This risk-free environment enables manufacturers to assess the impact of XR solutions, ensuring they are scalable and ready for real-world deployment in industrial processes.
